Core Entities & Categories
A common pitfall with enterprise quality management software is the demand for massive upfront data replication—requiring teams to import thousands of ERP tables, customer records, and part databases before logging their first 8D claim.
Fast8D takes a radically different approach: lightweight, on-demand master data that grows organically with your claims.
1. The Fast8D Philosophy: On-Demand Data
Fast8D is intentionally not designed to duplicate your ERP or CRM database. While Tenant Owners and Administrators maintain full governance over all master records in the Admin panel, you never need to pre-populate databases before solving problems.
Created on the Fly
When quality engineers open or manage a claim (from initial D0 intake through containment and resolution), any missing master entity—a new supplier, customer division, part number, delivery note, or project code—can be created directly in-place without leaving the claim workflow.
Smart Search & Progressive Autocomplete
Once an entity is created in any claim:
- It is instantaneously indexed across your tenant.
- As you type in future claims, Fast8D provides instantaneous autocomplete search and contextual hints based on prior claims.
- Over time, your quality catalog builds itself naturally, reflecting active production realities rather than stale ERP exports.
2. Core Operational Entities
Administrators can inspect, edit, merge, or manage these core entities at any time from the Admin navigation:
Companies & Partners
Quality investigations frequently span customers, external suppliers, subcontractors, and internal manufacturing sites:
- Partner Roles: Tag organizations as Customer, Supplier, or Internal Division.
- External User Access & Scoped Visibility: Companies can be directly associated with external users (such as customer representatives or supplier quality engineers). This grants them access to view any claim associated with their company—and strictly only their company's claims—facilitating transparent external collaboration while keeping all other investigations completely isolated and secure.
- Claim History: Every claim links to a company, giving leadership an instant, consolidated view of all historical 8D investigations, open containments, and recurring defects associated with that partner.
- Cost Allocation: Customer downtime liabilities and supplier chargebacks logged in D0 or corrective tasks automatically roll up under the partner's account.
Part Numbers
Traceability to exact engineering components is fundamental to root cause isolation:
- Item Details: Record internal part numbers, engineering revision levels, and descriptive specifications.
- Defect Correlation: Quality engineers can query all historical claims for a specific part number to spot whether a defect is tied to a specific revision or tooling iteration.
- Direct PFMEA Link: Part numbers provide the primary anchor when mapping verified D4 root causes back into your Process FMEAs and Control Plans.
Delivery Notes & Batch Tracking
Containment (D3) requires rapid quarantine of affected manufacturing lots:
- Link incoming supplier delivery notes or outgoing customer shipment documents directly to the claim.
- Isolate containment actions to specific suspect delivery lots, avoiding costly over-quarantine of unaffected inventory.
Projects
For organizations manufacturing across multi-model platforms or customer vehicle lines:
- Group multiple part numbers and claims under unified project programs.
- Monitor program-level health, milestone defect rates, and overall quality maturity throughout launch and serial production.
3. Nestable Categories & Classification Trees
To enable powerful filtering and statistical analysis across thousands of claims, Fast8D provides a fully nestable category engine located under Admin > Categories.
Scoped Operational Branches
Rather than dumping all tags into a single generic bucket, Fast8D organizes categories into dedicated operational branches:
- Claim: High-level classification (e.g., Claim Target routing, customer criticality, claim type).
- Failure: Defect classifications (e.g.,
Mechanical→Welding→Porosity). - Cause: Root cause mechanisms mapped under the 6M Ishikawa pillars (e.g.,
Machine→Spindle→Thermal Expansion). - Task: Classifications for containment actions (D3) and preventive/corrective actions (D5/D6).
- Cost: Expense categorization for fixed customer intake costs (D0) and variable task resolution expenses.
Fully Nestable Hierarchies (Parent & Sub-Categories)
Every branch supports multi-level parent-child nesting:
- Unlimited Depth: Structure broad parent categories that drill down into granular sub-categories.
- Parent Inherited Context: When filtering by a parent category, all nested sub-categories roll up automatically.
Why Categories Matter: Filtering & Statistical Analytics
Fast8D categories are not cosmetic labels—they are the analytical backbone of your quality intelligence:
- Precision Filtering: Quickly slice claims by specific failure families or supplier cause categories.
- Pareto & Statistical Analysis: Powers dashboard analytics to identify your "vital few" defect categories, repeat causal patterns, and cost drivers across departments and plants.
